I was privileged to have a LinkedIn Live conversation with Dr. Jeffrey Hull, the Education Director at Harvard Medical School's Institute of Coaching. We discussed the role of trust in creating high-performance teams, the science behind trust, and how to build trust when teams work remotely. Jeff and I filled our conversation with practical ways that leaders can measure and manage teams for high trust in order to reach high performance. We also laughed a lot; once the value of trust is recognized, it is easy to maintain it by showing one authentically cares about others.
My lab established the neuroscientific basis of trust in the early 2000s. Then, the technologists at Immersion were able to create a platform that lets anyone measure the precursor to trust, psychological safety, and how effectively teams are connecting with each other. Neurologic immersion captures trust among team members--people will not become immersed at work unless they trust their colleagues. The data show that when employees trust their colleagues, discretionary effort is high as is job satisfaction. That's how you build a high performance team.
